Integrative Care for Healthy Pregnancy

Now that you’ve conceived, congratulations! Now what?

Our group offers integrative care including acupuncture, therapeutic massage and nutritional counseling to help our expectant mothers feel their best during this special time.

Receiving care during pregnancy is a gift for both mother and baby.

Those who receive acupuncture through their pregnancies have smooth deliveries because acupuncture harmonizes the mothers and the baby’s energies, calms the nervous system and balances hormones.

While pregnant, a typical course of treatment is once per week up to the first trimester (12 weeks), to help hold the pregnancy.  Then once per month until the delivery. In preparation for labor and delivery during the last month of the pregnancy, the expectant mother should be seen more often.

Pregnancy can bring on it’s own set of symptoms and acupuncture treatment is recommended once a month during pregnancy to:

  • Ensure optimal health of mother and baby
  • Promote shorter labor
  • Help alleviate the below listed complaints
  • Encourage a smooth delivery
  • Speed recovery after the baby is born

As the pregnancy advances, acupuncture can help resolve such conditions as:

  • Nausea, Vomiting
  • Acid Reflux
  • Constipation
  • Hip Pain, Round Ligament Pain
  • Low Back Pain/Sciatica
  • Swelling
  • Anxiety
  • High Sugars
  • Digestive Issues
  • Gestational Carpal Tunnel
  • Anemia
  • Painful Varicose Veins
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Breech Presentation
  • Insomnia

Acupuncture and Moxibustion to Turn a Breech Baby

Moxibustion (Moxa) therapy is famous for it’s ability to assist a breech baby to head down position, in order to allow for natural delivery. Moxa treatment is the burning of an herb called Mugwort, (Ai Ye) to warm and stimulate acupuncture points. Moxa sticks are burned over acupuncture point UB67 (Zhi Yin), which is located near the outer corner of the nail on the little toe, bilaterally.

Moxa treatment is done daily until the baby turns. Since treatment is done daily, we demonstrate the technique, teach the couple how it is done, and provide moxa sticks for use at home. Acupuncture is done 2-3 times a week in conjunction with moxa for 2-3 weeks, or until the baby turns. Moxa treatments to turn a breech baby are best started around week 34-36.

Acupuncture to Induce Labor

As your due date nears, some women use acupuncture to facilitate a faster, easier delivery. Between weeks 38-41, acupuncture can be used to induce labor naturally, reducing the need for medical induction or the possible need for a c-section.
