Halloween Tips for Healthy Celebrations

Spooktacular Halloween Tips for Healthy Celebrations!

Halloween is a cherished holiday filled with costumes, thrilling tales, and, of course, delightful treats. While the festive spirit is contagious, it can present a nutritional challenge for families striving to maintain healthy eating habits. In this article, we’ll discuss ways for both parents and children to enjoy Halloween’s fun, maintain nutritional health, and incorporate insights from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

The Halloween Nutrition Challenge

This holiday often brings an overwhelming array of sugary temptations that can be hard to resist for everyone—from candy bars to colorful gummies. However, we can take proactive steps as a family to ensure that nutrition remains a priority, drawing inspiration from TCM principles.

Healthy Halloween Treat Ideas

To tackle Halloween nutrition, consider offering healthier alternatives to traditional sweets, aligning with TCM’s focus on balance and natural ingredients:

Homemade Snacks:

In TCM, homemade treats made with wholesome ingredients promote balance. Parents can involve children in baking cookies or muffins using whole-grain flour and natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup.

Fresh Fruit:

TCM emphasizes the importance of fresh fruits for maintaining balance. Families can create fun fruit displays with apple slices and nut butter, fruit kabobs, or mini fruit salads—nutritious and naturally sweet options that everyone can enjoy.

Dark Chocolate:

Dark chocolate with a high cocoa content (70% or more) is a better choice due to its lower sugar content and potential antioxidant benefits. Parents and children can share these treats together for a more mindful indulgence.

Popcorn:

When prepared mindfully, popcorn can be a healthy whole-grain snack. Try seasoning it with nutritional yeast for added flavor, making it a fun and tasty treat for movie nights.

Yogurt Parfaits:

Create yogurt parfaits with layers of yogurt, fresh berries, and a drizzle of honey. This is a great way for families to enjoy a satisfying treat that balances flavors and textures.

Baked Apples:

This delightful treat is perfect for the season and easy to make together.

Ingredients:

  • 4 apples
  • 3 Tbsp raisins
  • 1 cup walnuts, chopped
  • ¼ cup honey or maple syrup
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Coconut whipped cream (optional)

Instructions:

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • Cut the apples in half and scoop out the seeds. Place cut side up in an oblong baking dish.
  • In a small bowl, mix the melted coconut oil, honey or maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla. Add the walnuts and raisins to the mixture.
  • Sprinkle the filling evenly over the apples.
  • Cover the baking dish with foil and bake the apples until soft, approximately 40 minutes. Serve with coconut whipped cream, and enjoy!

Post-Halloween Nutrition Balance

After the Halloween festivities, it’s essential to restore balance in nutrition for both parents and children, and TCM offers valuable insights to guide this process:

Educating Children About Nutrition

TCM teaches the importance of balancing Yin and Yang energies in food. This is a great opportunity for parents to educate their children about the value of balanced nutrition. Explain that while occasional treats are enjoyable, a healthy diet provides the energy and nutrients essential for growth and overall well-being.

Pumpkin Soup with Coconut Milk

A wonderful way to nourish your family after Halloween is with a comforting Pumpkin Soup. You can substitute butternut squash if preferred. The addition of coconut milk instead of heavy cream won’t be noticeable to most, and finishing it off with a spoonful of plain Greek yogurt, chopped parsley, and a drizzle of high-quality olive oil makes it irresistible. Plus, making a double batch leaves you with extra to freeze for busy days!

Ingredients:

  • 1 large sweet potato
  • 1 small pumpkin or butternut squash, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes (you can buy pre-cubed butternut squash for convenience)
  • 3 large carrots, peeled and cut in half
  • 2 large red onions, halved
  • ¼ cup high-quality extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon flaky sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 pinch of white pepper
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 pinch ground black pepper
  • 4 cups chicken stock
  • 2 (13.5 ounce) cans coconut milk

Directions:

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Wrap the sweet potato in foil and bake until soft, about 45 minutes.
  • While the sweet potato is roasting, place the pumpkin, carrots, and onions on a baking sheet. Brush with olive oil, sprinkle with salt, allspice, and white pepper. Bake for 30-40 minutes until soft.
  • Peel the sweet potato and squash when cool enough to handle. Transfer to a large saucepan and add the carrots, onions, nutmeg, cumin, coriander, ginger, salt, and pepper. Stir in the chicken stock and coconut milk. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
  • Puree the soup using an immersion blender or regular blender until smooth. Serve warm with crusty bread and enjoy the tastes of fall!
