Springtime Cleanse! Clean Out Your Internal Closet

Why would it be important to clean out your internal closet?

We like to think of a closet cleaning as a rearrangement of things. To let go of old worn out stuff, to reexamine things, to create space and make new. It can be a trying process, but in the end it ALWAYS feels better to do the cleaning.

It is the same with our bodies… “clean out”,“purify” or, “take a time out” where we choose nutritious foods, create some real down time (at home), get a massage, do a gentle yoga routine basically take a real time out.

It is important to take this time out at least once per year.

For me: I clean my internal closet once a year, for a month. While still working and running my life, I do a structured purification (which is pretty simple) using the Standard Process cleanse which includes three meals a day. No starving!

And this particular month is different than all the others; focusing more on hot yoga once a week to sweat out all the “stuff”, taking baths, getting massage and taking walks. I write a lot in my notebook and set goals. I sleep, nap and sleep more. I look forward to it every year.

Is there a “right time” to do it?

The best time for a cleanse and purification is in the Spring. In Chinese Medicine, the Spring is analogous to the Liver element, “the Emperor of Detoxification” and is especially responsive to purging toxins this time of year. You can help your Liver accomplish this important task with some simple habits.

Why should I clean out my closet?

Here are some indications that you need to take a time out and reorganize:

  • Fatigue that is not relieved by sleep

  • Bad breath
  • Pain

What other treatments should I do while cleansing?

Any modality that helps to detoxify the liver, move the lymph and help increase circulation anywhere in the body. Such as: Acupuncture, herbal medicine, massage, saunas, hot yoga, and walking.

Is there a recommended amount of cleansing?

Starting with one cleanse per year is appropriate. Often, many have felt so good on the cleanse, they take some of the good habits with them for the rest of the year or they look forward to doing the purification right before the Holidays as well.

So one can consider Spring and Winter.

What is the ideal takeaway from a cleanse?

The best thing one can learn from a purification month is one new habit. I have done this process for more than 10 years. I not only look forward to it, but I always take just one habit away. Each year it is different and the habits I have continued to live by: no salad dressing, diet coke, ice cream, refined sugar, pasta, hot dogs, wheat, and only swiss water process decaf coffee.
