No Pain, Just Gain: What You Should Know About Acupuncture Needles

Acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years, offering a holistic approach to pain relief, stress reduction, and overall well-being. However, for many new to the practice, the thought of needles can be a little intimidating.

Will it hurt? What should I expect?

Understanding acupuncture needle sizes and techniques for painless needling can put your mind at ease and help you get the most out of your treatment.

Understanding Acupuncture Needle Sizes

Here’s the surprising truth: acupuncture needles are actually much thinner than those used for injections or blood draws. While a standard hypodermic needle measures around 2.5mm, acupuncture needles are a mere 0.20mm in diameter—more than 10 times thinner!

This design makes acupuncture minimally invasive and, for most people, virtually painless.

Acupuncture needles come in a variety of sizes and lengths, each carefully chosen based on the area being treated and the nature of the problem.

Common Acupuncture Needle Gauges and Lengths

Acupuncture needle thickness is measured in gauges, and the most commonly used sizes range from 0.12mm to 0.35mm in diameter. The length of the needles varies depending on the treatment area, typically ranging from 15mm to 75mm.

Here’s a breakdown of common needle sizes:

  • 0.12mm – 0.16mm (Ultra-Fine Needles): Used for delicate areas such as the face or ears where sensitivity is higher. They are also available for more sensitive patients.
  • 0.18mm – 0.25mm (Standard Needles): Most commonly used for general acupuncture treatments on the body. Our clinic generally uses 0.18-0.20mm
  • 0.30mm – 0.35mm (Thicker Needles): Used for deeper muscle penetration, often for conditions involving chronic pain or deep tissue stimulation. These are almost never used in our clinic, our thickest needles are 0.25mm

The length of the needle also varies based on the target area. For example:

  • 15mm – 25mm: Ideal for facial acupuncture and shallow points such as the feet or hands.
  • 30mm – 50mm: Used for medium-depth points on arms, legs, and the back.
  • 60mm – 75mm: Designed for deep insertion in thicker areas such as the hips, buttocks, or sacrum.

How Acupuncturists Make the Experience Painless

Despite what you might expect, acupuncture is usually a painless experience—and often, quite relaxing. Our skilled acupuncturists, with years of experience behind them, use several techniques to minimize discomfort and enhance relaxation. This expertise plays a key role in ensuring your comfort and the effectiveness of your therapy.

Here are a few techniques we use to make the experience as painless as possible:

1. Using Thinner Acupuncture Needles

Thinner needles (0.12mm – 0.16mm) are ideal for patients who are new to acupuncture or sensitive to needling. These needles are barely felt upon insertion. While we have these on hand, they are almost never needed, as most patients are comfortable with the 0.20mm needles.

2. Gentle Insertion Techniques

Our experienced acupuncturists use quick, controlled insertions to bypass pain receptors in the skin. Some practitioners use guide tubes, which allow for smoother penetration with minimal sensation. Dr. Davina was trained in the ‘flying needle’ technique, that allows rapid insertion that is generally painless.

3. Choosing the Right Points

Some acupuncture points are naturally more sensitive than others. Practitioners consider this when selecting points and use alternative placements if necessary. The vast majority of points used in our practice are on the abdomen, and below the knees and elbows, areas that are generally less sensitive.

4. Pre-Treatment Relaxation

Acupuncturists may use relaxation techniques, such as sweeping the skin, or massaging or pressing the area before inserting the needle, reducing any initial tension. We also let our patients relax with heat for several minutes before inserting needles.

5. Patient Communication

Communication is key! Our practitioners will check in with your comfort thought the session, and adjust the technique or needle size if needed.
