Acupuncture for High Blood Pressure

Regulating the Heart, Calming the Mind: Acupuncture for High Blood Pressure

A few months ago, a patient came to me with a new issue.

She had been seeing me for a year for lower back pain, with great results, but now she was concerned about her blood pressure. Her blood pressure was running consistently high—160/80 with spikes into the 200s.

This can be quite dangerous, increasing the risk of stroke and kidney problems. In her case, it was already impacting her kidneys. When the spikes hit, she would experience intense symptoms: spontaneous sweating, shortness of breath, and a strange tension that crept from her shoulders into her jaw. These episodes made even simple activities, like taking the stairs, feel risky.

Her MD was concerned and wanted her to add a third medication. However, each new prescription came with unacceptable side effects, including dizziness and a racing heart—worse than the original problem.

So she asked, Can acupuncture lower her blood pressure?

How Acupuncture Supports Blood Pressure Regulation

I informed her that acupuncture can, in fact, help regulate blood pressure—especially when paired with herbal therapy. This isn’t a “quick fix,” but with consistent treatment, many patients see improvements in how their body handles stress and pressure.

Acupuncture works in several ways:

  • Calming the nervous system

  • Improving blood vessel function

  • Reducing stress and anxiety (which contribute to high blood pressure)

  • Supporting the body’s natural self-regulation

One major source of elevated blood pressure is sympathetic dominance, a chronic activation of the “fight or flight” system often linked to long-term stress.

Acupuncture helps restore balance by activating the vagus nerve, which calms the heart rate, improves digestion, and resets the body’s stress response. (You can read more on this in my blog about the vagus nerve: Acupuncture and the Vagus Nerve.)

A Remarkable Shift

After six weeks of regular treatments—including customized herbal formulas and targeted acupuncture—her blood pressure stabilized at 125/60. Her MD was surprised and pleased, and she no longer needed to change her medications. Most importantly, she felt like herself again—able to move through her day without fear of triggering a spike.

While every case is different, this is a powerful reminder of how Chinese medicine supports the body’s capacity for balance and healing—even with complex conditions like hypertension.
